Wind and Severe Weather Protection
High winds and other extreme weather conditions can do a great deal of damage to your property. These tips will help you keep your home in weather-resistant condition and reduce the risk of damage in severe weather.
- Weather protection starts with your roof. This is one of the most important and also most vulnerable parts of your home. Have your roof professionally inspected and keep it well maintained.
- Keep any trees around your home properly pruned and clear up dead branches and other debris promptly. When choosing new trees for your yard, pick varieties that can withstand high winds.
- High velocity winds can turn garden furniture, barbecues and tree branches into destructive missiles. If severe weather is forecast, keep the area surrounding your home clear of garbage and recycling bins, patio furniture, yard debris or other objects that heavy winds could blow around.
- Greenhouses, storage sheds and other outbuildings should be secured, either to a permanent foundation or with straps and ground anchors. Seek professional assistance to ensure any outbuildings will be safe in high winds.
- Garage doors (particularly two-car) are also vulnerable to damage from high winds. Ensure a new garage door is designed to withstand high winds. For an existing door, fitted bracing kits are available to provide additional support.
- Contact your insurance provider to be sure your home is adequately covered in the event of wind damage.
