With winter in full swing many Canadians are hitting the slopes with their skis and snowboards in tow. Considering an average snowboard costs upwards of $500 and some skis well beyond that, it’s no mystery why thieves find them an easy and attractive target when left unlocked or unattended.
“Skis and snowboards are a tempting target, especially when people leave their equipment unattended as they stop in to the lodge to get warm and rest up. Luckily, there are ways to protect your gear and make sure your day on the slopes is fun and worry free,” says Amy Woods, Allstate Insurance Company of Canada spokesperson.
Allstate Canada offers the following tips to help Canadians protect their skis and snowboards:
Lock It Up
• Secure your valuables in a locker or use check-in services if available.
• Leave all unnecessary items at home or locked and out of view in your vehicle.
• Invest in a good lock. Opt for a combination lock as you may require a locksmith if you lose your keys in the snow.
• If you do not have a lock, or forgot to bring it, rent a lock for the day. Ski shops will often rent out cable or clamp locks
• Choose to lock your skis and snowboards in a coin operated locking system if one is available.
Out-Smart Thieves
• Consider separating your skis and place them in two different racks – no thief wants to steal one ski.
• Buddy up with a friend or family member and split your skis which will create two mismatched sets.
• Position skis and snowboards with brand names out of plain sight.
Mark, Record & Report it
• Mark your skis or snowboard with your initials or another mark to ensure they are unique and identifiable.
• Write down the brand, size and serial number (if available) of all of your equipment and keep it in your locker.
• If your equipment is lost or stolen, report it to hill security. The sooner you report it, the better the chances of finding your equipment.
To help you can get back out on the slopes in the event your skis or snowboard are stolen, you should check with your insurance company to see if you have replacement coverage on your policy.
